<text>Nagdo Betala is one of the central characters of the well-acclaimed Kannada novel Swapna Saraswata. The novel, metaphorically presents him as the community conscience of Gowda Saraswata Brahmins (GSBs). However, reading and analysis of this character from other sources offer us an understanding of how there is more to this character than what is normally thought of. The character of Nagdo Betala has its origins in the Konkani folklore. Many a different versions of an old folksong on Nagdo Betala are available as well as the varying interpretations of his personality. This paper aims to deliberate on the use of this folk character for religious motives and the concurrent political implications at work in deriving significant meaning for the different communities. These communities are seen either associating themselves with Nagdo Betala’s character or distancing themselves from him, and accordingly, try to elevate or degrade his personality.</text>

<text>Childhood is the most important phase in a person’s life. The conducive environment available during this stage of life determines positive psychosocial development of an individual. The current study was conducted among 338 children in difficult circumstances to assess the stress, behaviour problem, adjustment in the areas of home, school, teachers, general and peers and self esteem. The results of the study brought out that, children in difficult circumstances undergo moderate to high stress. These children also exhibited higher behaviour problems which is antisocial and neurotic in nature. The adjustment is poor, especially, in the areas of general adjustment, teacher and school. The self esteem is also found to be average to poor. The results highlight the need for psychosocial interventions which are curative, preventive and promotive in nature to address the problems experienced by the children.</text>

<text>This article will explore the impact and learning outcomes of a short term study tour of a cohort of Australian social work students. Of particular interest was the impact of the programme on the students and specifically knowledge of international practice, cultural sensitivity as well as personal and professional growth. A qualitative approach was adopted to provide insights into the perceived impact of the programme and its contribution to the preparation of social work students to work in an increasingly globalised world. Indications are that it was effective in enhancing cultural sensitivity, understanding of structural factors contributing to inequity, the practical experience of poverty, personal growth and professional identity. For students, it was a valued and transformational learning experience.  The “real life” experiential learning was highly valued by students.</text>

<text>This article is focused on substance abuse prevention from the perspective of India. Research participants were 112 substance addiction treatment professionals associated with government approved addiction treatment centres in India. They were called from 26 Indian states and 4 union territories in India. Data were collected through a survey instrument using a mixed-methods research design with a focus on concurrent strategies. Participants provided practical recommendations for creating public awareness systemically, concurrently and consistently through a prevention agenda focusing on important social sectors such as schools, employment settings, religious/spiritual settings, and at local, state and national domains of India. This study concludes that creating massive awareness campaigns simultaneously and consistently over long periods of time in all these sectors of the society will facilitate systemic change at the macro-level. Findings have practical implications for policymakers everywhere working towards preventing substance abuse.</text>

<text>Although, foster care is relatively widespread in Switzerland, the professional transition planning of the transfer of decision-making abilities, after the foster children attain the age of majority, is a topic, which has rarely been taken into account so far. However, it is important that transition planning, including all administrative, transfer of decision-making abilities, and guardianship processes, should begin at least one year before the age of majority (the age of consent in Switzerland is 18). Even so, professional transition planning is barely standardised and institutionalised yet. In this practice-based research study the current situation and the perception of the relevant groups, the need of the practice, and foster families have been analysed. Therefore, qualitative data collection methods have been used to focus on a multi-perspective approach, including that on foster parents and social workers at official municipality-level. Several relevant topics and aspects, such as applicable administrative tasks or residential issues, which are considered to be of particular relevance and therefore have to be addressed during the transition planning process, have been found. Moreover, important emotional and social aspects were identified.</text>

<text>'Freedom and Determinism' is a conflicting postulate with reference to the nature of human conduct. Is man free or is everything determined? Freedom is a matter of choice based on rationality, intelligence and knowledge. Moral freedom implies both choice and responsibility. Man is morally good because, he enjoys freedom which makes life meaningful. So, freedom and social responsibility go hand in hand. Determinists argue that free will is impossible and preceding causes necessitate everything. Naturalistic determinists consider man a part of causal chain. His actions are determined by antecedent causes. Hence, man is an 'instrumental cause. Theistic Determinists trace man's actions to God's controlling hand. Hard-determinists believe that determinism is true and moral responsibility is an illusion. So, determinism is incompatible with free will and moral responsibility. They interpret freedom as the 'Liberty of indifference.' In the opinion of soft determinists, determinism is true but man can make choices, which are the effects of certain antecedent events. So, freedom and determinism are compatible and interpret freedom as the 'Liberty of Spontaneity'. According to libertarians, determinism is false, freedom is possible and man is morally responsible for his actions. Freedom and determinism, being an ethical problem sometimes seems to deny each other and some other times seem to co-inhere in our life. The paper argues that freedom, however limited it may be, is a 'fact' of experience while, determinism is mostly a matter of 'faith', and whether to accept the fact or the faith, depends on one's individual choice and belief. Both represent different attitudes of man. So, the key is more 'attitudinal' than 'conceptual'.</text>

<text>Though research on stress has been on the increase in recent years, occupational stress literature is based, to a large extent, on individual perception rather than substantiated fact. The present study was undertaken with the objective of developing a stress assessment test for the software professional. The test consists of 57 items covering four factors namely, job-related, organisational, personal and behavioural. The test was administered to 33 software specialists from a software firm in Bangalore. Based on the data, percentile norms were established. The scale was subjected to reliability test. The split half reliability is 0.816**. Work is currently on in the area and further research is required in this direction. Individual moves into a state of exhaustion, from which tissue breakdown and even death can result. In other words, continued stress can lead to bodily damage. The body manifests the stress reaction by a rise in blood pressure, increased adrenaline, changed heartbeat, more RBCs, slower digestion, and so on. However, Selye argued that a moderate amount of stress could be a positive experience while too little stress could be negative.</text>

<text>The experience of economic liberalisation began to be felt by every common person in India during the mid 90s.The effects, however, were not uniform. It had a number of resultant outcomes depending upon the variables in the respective situations. The effects, for example, on rural and urban lives, were different. The receiver-benefits by the 'haves' and 'have-nots' were not the same. The economic liberalisation had two broad economic contributes to the people in India: emergence of monetary economy over and above other forms of economies, and increase in the options and opportunities for livelihood. The social consequences of economic liberalisation could be seen in the three main constituents of the social system: the individual, the family and the community. And the consequences are not all very encouraging. The paper argues that identifying change is the first step towards managing change and acknowledging change is a precondition for effective change management. Identifying and acknowledging the social consequences of economic liberalisation is most likely to help in the continuation of interventions that are needed for the constructive strengthening of the social order of society</text>
